5 Maintenance Tips to Get Your Vehicle Ready for Spring

Winter weather can do a number on your vehicle! The snow, ice, and salt create potholes in the roads, which then wreak havoc on your car. Not to mention the film of grime that is left behind by the melting snow, dulling your paint job.

Once the snow’s gone, you can get busy erasing the damage that was done.

What are the best ways to get your vehicle ready for spring?

Here are five easy tips:

  1. Banish the salt. Salt is necessary in cold, snowy weather to make roads safe, but it sure can cause issues with your car if not cleaned off. Over time, it can damage your vehicle’s undercarriage. Make sure to take it somewhere that has the ability to thoroughly remove the salt that may have built up underneath.
  2. Check the fluids. Flushing your transmission fluid and getting an oil change are ideal activities for the spring. Did you know that neglecting your transmission can lead to very costly repairs? Also, don’t forget to get the window washer fluid, cooling system fluid, and brake fluid checked out.
  3. Have someone take a look at the brakes. It goes without saying that brakes that aren’t functioning properly are a major safety risk. Have the pads and rotors checked and replace anything that isn’t in tip-top shape.
  4. Check the alignment and suspension. Repeatedly hitting potholes can knock your car out of alignment. You’ll notice it pulling to one side or the steering wheel vibrating if this is an issue. The suspension can be damaged by potholes, as well. After winter is over, get things checked out by a qualified professional. And try to avoid the potholes that have been exposed by the melting snow.
  5. Take care of the tires. Extremely cold temperatures can affect your tire pressure. You should also check the treads and other areas of the tire for undue wear and tear, which can affect handling and cause safety concerns. Don’t forget the spare!
