Car Care Tips: Put the Spotlight on Your Headlights

Fall’s here and one of the things that means is fewer hours of daylight.

Less daylight means your headlights are getting more of a workout than they do during the spring and summer months.

They may not seem like that big of a deal, but your car’s lights are one of the most important safety features on your vehicle.

Just think about it – if you can’t see or be seen, your chances of an accident skyrocket!

So, here’s what you need to do in order to stay on top of headlight care.

Keep them clean
All headlights, tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals should be given periodic scrubs.

A collection of dirt and debris can keep your lights from shining as brightly as they need to in order to be safe.

Aim them correctly
If your headlights aren’t aimed in the right position, they can blind other drivers and make it difficult for you to see at night.

Know when to turn them on
A common mistake that drivers make is not turning their headlights on early enough.

Early twilight is a difficult time to see and your headlights are valuable during this in-between time.

When in doubt, turn ‘em on!

Know the rules
In Ohio, the law states that you must have your headlights on if the weather requires the use of windshield wipers.

A word about interior lighting
If you notice a dim bulb or one that’s completely burned out on the inside of your vehicle, it could mean a couple different things.

One is that you have a bulb that simply needs to be replaced.

Another, more important, reason could be that your battery is starting to lose efficacy.

Dimming lights are a warning sign that your battery is on its last leg!

Lights on for safety
Protecting you and your passengers should be your number one priority when you’re on the road.

Your headlights and the other lights on your vehicle are one of the best ways to ensure you’re doing everything you can.
